Last week, when I introduced this prompt I was all RAH-RAH, but to actually sit and pick a song or come up with my own has proven to be quite daunting. I sat down and thought of different aspects of my life that I can fight through, and then I would veer in another direction. I honestly had to get up from my computer and clear my head, but it’s what I chose to do to clear my head that hit me.

I feel slightly shallow writing this, because I know others will use this prompt for something more meaningful, but this is my fight right now. I am seriously trying to get myself in shape, and I’m loving it. It’s weird that I’m starting to rely on exercise to help me cope with my own mind (as I just told you above). Here’s another example: On Friday, I was done watching all the sad news I turned off my TV and put down my iPhone. My mind kept swimming in a million thoughts as to why we haven’t progressed in this world among other things; I needed something to free me- I hit the gym. My husband and I have turned our garage into a gym; it’s one of the best things we’ve done all year.

 The gym was our gift to ourselves, we have big plans for us, our health, and our bodies this year, and we’ve been doing pretty good with that. We don’t eat whatever we want, but we also do not stop ourselves from enjoying a cupcake or cookie. I cannot eat like I use to. 🙁 Growing up I was thin. I didn’t have to do much I was just thin. My dad use to call me “Flaquita” (skinny little girl) he said it with carinoso (lovingly). I remember hiding my arms because they were so skinny, but for the past few years I have been hiding them for other reasons. I got really big with my first baby, but I was lucky enough to shed the weight. I actually didn’t have much of a problem dropping the baby weight with each baby. I cannot even blame them, the only thing I can say is the mommy pouch is real, but I didn’t do much to fix that. My Best Friend’s WeddingPhotoBoothPhotos My best friend got married two years ago and that was a major kick in the pants to get myself in shape. Even though my husband and I were getting our butts handed to us by Sean T {Insanity} we both weren’t anywhere where we wanted to be. Seeing myself in those pictures made me mad at myself; why did I let myself go? Although I have to admit the ladies were all so sweet complimenting me on my weight telling me how good I looked “especially for a mom of three” which is compliment but not. I wanted to look better, so I continued working out when I got back from Texas. I hurt my knee and that gave me the perfect excuse to just… stop.        I would start up again, but then stop. I would jog, run, play, but to seriously create some sort of schedule to really make exercise a priority, nope.  No MORE Excuses!!

I’m done. I cannot keep making excuses for myself (including my PCOS, because Jillian Michaels!!)! I hurt my knee a few months back and that didn’t stop me. I was ready to rock the next day, I made sure to correct my form and wear my knee brace. Today, my knees are much stronger- I can feel it. I’m much stronger. I never thought I would be lifting weights and pushing myself the way I am now. It’s simply MIND OVER MATTER. I GOT THIS! I WANT THIS. I NEED THIS. THEY NEED THIS…Baby Girl Boxing

I want my girls to see that women can be strong, fit is in. I don’t want them to worry about being skinny or thigh gap. I also want my son to see me and his sisters as strong women. (He gets in on the gym action too.) I want my husband and I to keep strong for one another and the babies. I love getting in the gym with him, we always cheer each other on. Plus it’s sexy to see your honey in the gym 😉 Hello!

  1. I love this for so many reasons (one of which in the previous post I read mentioned the same song, though for a very different reason). I do a terrible job about eating well. I get in my veggies & such, but I have such a sweet tooth. Like you, I was super skinny when I was younger but my body just isn’t the same. I realistically can’t eat whatever I want now.

    But I do try to exercise at least twice a week (will actually be going for a short run after I drop off Eve this morning). Eve often comes to the gym with me, and while she doesn’t actually *see* me exercising I want to model for her the importance of being healthy and taking care of your body and being strong! And “I’m Sexy and I Know It” is a fantastic song for getting you pumped up to exercise. I think I’ll actually put in on my playlist this morning 😉

      I believe we eat pretty good, but my daughter is a baker and my husband is a bread maker, which is hard to resist. OH CARBS.

      I think that’s great that you’re modeling this type of behavior toward health and fitness early on in Eve’s life. When the kids were younger we use to do Yoga with them, they loved it.

  2. I love this because I’ve been doing more of the exercise thing this year. I started out really great…and then by March I was dealing with killer shin splints – and during the time I took off to make sure I didn’t make the injury worse, I kind of gave up. I’ve just started getting back into it the last couple of months, and I can honestly say that I feel better when I’m getting regular exercise. That is so foreign to me, but it is true. And it is a fight!

    Thanks for sharing your experience and reminding me that I can (smartly) exercise through the pain and meet my health goals.

    1. YOU CAN DO IT!!
      Shin splints are the worst. When I run I get them, so I do not run as much as I use to. I can do sprints without splints… weird? I love my rower because it’s a full body exercise minus the shin splints.

      I’m happy you’re getting back in the swing of things. I know we can do anything we put our minds to. I was watching American Ninja Warrior with my family, and I kept thinking “Why not me?” I’m not saying I’m auditioning for the show, but I’m saying I have no excuse.

  3. I love that you are making the time and making being strong and healthy a priority. It isn’t about the next fad diet or workout plan. It is about you and your family getting strong together. I love that you are sharing your littles that women are strong too. That is such an important message. When I tell the boys to eat their vegetables I always say, “Don’t you want to grow up to be strong that Daddy AND Mama?” Because guess what Mama’s are strong too! I love that you are instilling that in your little ones. You are an amazing inspiration to me, your family, and so many others. XO

  4. Oh man, the mommy pouch! So, so real. But you know, I’ve found that really, I’m way more self conscious about it than any other people are of it on me, you know? Just today, I had, of all things, a seaweed wrap (long story, it’s a funny one!) and I was all apologetic about my baby belly, and she looked at me, laughed, and said, “Honey, you have nothing to be worrying about!” So, there’s that.

    You’re so right on though, about us fighting ourselves. How many times do I do that in a day? Constantly it seems, about so many things. Motherhood is filled with such gray area, such moving targets, that it’s impossible not to fight our own decisions and wonder if we’re doing it right, if we are enough, if they’re getting enough. In the end, I think we just have to take a step back, take a deep breath, and remember we are doing our best and show ourselves a little grace. It helps those little people who look up to us realize we’re human, and that we’re strong–and that’s such a valuable lesson!

    1. Eh.. mommy pouch, it gets all the side-eye in the world from me. I hate it. I’m trying my hardest to rid myself of it. Seaweed wrap! Now, that sounds amazing!!
      We are much more harder on ourselves than we should be; thank goodness for sweet people who bring us back to reality like the lady who was doing your wrap.

      Mothering is the best thing in the world and slightly stressful, but only because we make it that way. We’re constantly second guessing ourselves, our actions, our words, because we care. We’re caring loving mothers that want the very best for our babies. You’re doing a great job, mama!

  5. Great song – not shallow at all! It’s true – the best project of your life is YOU.
    My doctor told me to exercise – it was my prescription. I told him about my anxiety and how it’s come to be, and he said, “Exercise – you might find it’s a powerful antidote.” I haven’t listened.. yet.. but I sure will see if that takes the edge off my thinking/feeling.

    1. I started to feel shallow, but then I thought my health is serious. We should all fight to be healthier and stronger, and the kids seeing it and joining is a bonus. 🙂
      I totally agree with your doctor! I even told my husband I *feel* better.
      The punching bag does wonders too, I promise you’ll love punching the bag! When I really need to unwind myself it’s great to punch it out.

  6. That’s awesome about turning your garage into a gym and working out with your husband. Having a workout buddy is key to staying on track, I think! Good luck to both of you, on your way to healthier selves! I’m also on a mission to incorporate a healthier lifestyle (less sitting around on my bum!).

  7. Good for you, Dean! Self-care is SO important. When we first moved to Hawaii I was working out and eating healthy and I felt GREAT. I was able to maintain it once I got where I wanted to be (even with my sweet tooth rearing its ugly head every now and then)…until I had Apollo. Since then I’ve fallen off the wagon completely. It doesn’t help that we’re living out of our suitcases right now and enjoying all the good Mexican food :). Hoping to get re-motivated once we settle in MD.

    Anyway, I’d give you a big ol’ high five if I could, and I’d ask to see your guns too 🙂

  8. You shouldn’t feel shallow about this being your fight. This is probably everyone’s fight at some point in life. I’m cutting back and exercising more. I’m hoping to win the fight with good health as well. I always get inspired by your posts. Good luck with your fight.
